چکیده

Introduction: Bacterial antibiotic resistance has become one of the biggest threats to global health. In the United States alone, at least 2 million cases of illness and 23,000 of deaths are caused by antibioticresistant bacteria annually. The overuse of antibiotics is the most important factor responsible to the development of antibiotic resistance around the world [1]. To overcome bacterial drug resistance and to reduce the use of antibiotics, many nanoscale antibacterial agents have been developed to kill bacteria by disrupting the bacterial cell membrane. In this study, we have designed and developed a type of selfassembling antibacterial peptide amphiphile that can kill drug-resistant bacteria without the use of antibiotics.

Arginine-rich self-assembling peptides as potent antibacterial gels.

Hydrogel materials that display inherent activity against bacteria can be used to directly treat accessible wounds to prevent or kill existing infection. Hydrogels composed of self-assembling β-hairpin peptides, having a high content of arginine, were found to be extremely effective at killing both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, including multi-drug resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa. ...

Biscationic Tartaric Acid-Based Amphiphiles: Charge Location Impacts Antimicrobial Activity.

Cationic amphiphiles have received increasing attention as antimicrobials given their unique ability to disrupt bacteria cell membranes. While extensive research has demonstrated that amphiphiles' hydrophobic-to-charge ratio significantly modulates antibacterial activity, less work has focused on elucidating the specific impact of charge location on amphiphile bioactivity. In this study, two se...

Hp1404, a New Antimicrobial Peptide from the Scorpion Heterometrus petersii

Antimicrobial peptides have attracted much interest as a novel class of antibiotics against a variety of microbes including antibiotics resistant strains. In this study, a new cationic antimicrobial peptide Hp1404 was identified from the scorpion Heterometrus petersii, which is an amphipathic α-helical peptide and has a specific inhibitory activity against gram-positive bacteria including methi...

Antibacterial activity of the human host defence peptide LL-37 and selected synthetic cationic lipids against bacteria associated with oral and upper respiratory tract infections.

OBJECTIVES We aim to develop antibacterial peptide mimics resistant to protease degradation, with broad-spectrum activity at sites of infection. METHODS The bactericidal activities of LL-37, ceragenins CSA-13, CSA-90 and CSA-92 and the spermine-conjugated dexamethasone derivative D2S were evaluated using MIC and MBC measurements. Gingival fibroblast counting, interleukin-8 (IL-8) and lactate ...

Antibacterial Activity of Thymus pubescens Methanolic Extract

During the last two decades, various medicinal plants have been studied for their possible antimicrobial activity to discover new antimicrobial agents capable of resolving problems such as the development of drug resistance in pathogenic microorganisms as well as the side effects of some present antibiotics. In this study, the antibacterial activity of methanolic extract of T. pubescens (rich i...
